This year, we've chosen to express our gratitude in a way that supports a cause close to our hearts. In lieu of our usual thank you gifts, we've made a $1000 donation to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) in North Sumatra.
Tragically, their Orangutan Quarantine & Rehabilitation Centre was recently devastated by landslides, leaving their veterinary clinic in ruins and endangering the lives of 39 orangutans in their care.
These incredible animals, already facing threats from the illegal wildlife trade and deforestation, now face an even more uncertain future. SOCP is working tirelessly to rebuild and provide urgent care, but they desperately need our support. The SOCP Quarantine & Rehabilitation Centre serves as both a rescue facility and a rehabilitation site for orangutans impacted by the illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, and human-wildlife conflict. Combined these threats have taken a huge toll on the species with all three being listed as Critically Endangered. The centre prepares rescued orangutans for reintroduction into their natural habitats through medical care, rehabilitation, and socialisation training.
Since its establishment in 2001 SOCP has cared for over 463 orangutans, successfully reintroducing 352 of these into the wild, 211 at the edge of the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in Jambi and 141 in the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh. Through these efforts two entirely new genetically viable populations have been established in historic ranges, a crucial step to ensuring this species does not go extinct.
